A big plot point in the game from a characterisation perspective is all of his friends and party members trying to make Squall not be an edgy little fuck and actually smile once and awhile. The fact that after all the shit he's been through he actually manages to accomplish that at the end of the game was a nice little thing that the game did and I liked it.I still think FFVIII is arguably one of the fucking worst FF's out there, but hey, it did some things right and one of them was his character arc.

Tidus is literally the best written FF lead character, he reacts realistically to the shitty situations he's put in, and has some issues that are really relatable, like his complicated relationship with his dad.
He's the only main character who you can see is really putting on a brave face for everyone but deep down he's lost and scared shitless, and as the game goes the front starts to fall apart and he grows into a dependable guy who thinks outside the box.
