It was actually pretty cleverly setup, there are small scenes in earlier episodes usually at the end where it's clear Jimmy wants to be in with the Eds. Him taking on their good and bad attributes (Scheming and scamming from Eddy, intellectual capacity from DoublelbuoD, and while not really a skill his brotherly, and manipulative, relation with Sarah is sort of what Ed would like. Also that one time Jimmy was hypnotized he had Ed like strength) but turning against them due to being mocked or ignored really hit a lot of notes.
It's furthered by comparing the other male friends/role models Jimmy can't connect with, Johnny's a weirdo, Rolf is Rolf and Kevin's a self-centered twat so Jimmy really only has the Eds left. Yet they won't have him, yet he's always seeing or hearing about their 3 Musketeer/Stooges antics by proxy of Sarah, 3 inseparable friends who will defend each other but won't truly allow anyone in their circle. Like the episode Eddy took Jimmy under wing but was still playing him like he was sub-Ed, and it clearly got to Jimmy.

I had a feeling thatthe characters knew I was controlling the main character from another world, but when they revealed that he was losing all his senses and control, that surprised me. It struck me as being similar to Alzheimer's, in a way. Also the OP being the code that summons you into their world, that was surprising.

I know it is completely lost on most people these days, but the whole "you play as Raiden" thing was beyond huge when MGS2 first came out.
All of the trailers, screenshots, media and presentations (of which there were a LOT) all pointed to being Snake the whole game. This was before the era of games leaking - literally no one knew.
You played the game for about an hour and then you were mindfucked for hours. It was amazing.
It makes me sad that you can't do this type of thing again (they tried in MGSV but ultimately failed, it was too easy to figure out and the internet is a very different place now 10 years later...).

I didn't find out about the whole Snake/Raiden switcheroo until years later. I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing I went in with no real expectations.
