Is space engineers any good?

I too would like to know the answer to this question. I like KSP but I'm not sure if Space Engineers looks that compelling.
SpaceEngine is free

So is Orbiter and so is Diaspora. All are excellent, easily as good as anything you buy on Steam..

It's kinda fun for building spaceships, although it's physics engine is generally a buggy mess, breaking ships apart is kinda fun
survival mode is grindy boring shit, and the entire game is a glitchy, laggy mess that plays like shit, feels like shit, and feels half finished.
Don't buy it, play something like MachineCraft instead.

Sword of the Stars is a fucking fantastic 4x with heavy RTS aspects; the first game is better but the second became playable over time.
Distant Worlds: Universe is fucking amazing, but I'd try it before you buy it to see if it's for you.
Endless Space is an alright space 4x game with cool lore and nice aesthetics, but a somewhat mediocre endgame and combat. I find it pretty relaxing to play as 4x games go.
Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion is a great RTS with 4x elements, doesn't require high actions per minute to play either.
Kerbal Space Program is a fun orbital physics simulator that doesn't feel entirely polished or finished but is easy to pick up and play and feels really nice.
Space Station 13 is Space Station 13, and not on steam.

Thanks much. I've been looking for opinions on most of those.
