For single player (ie not on bnet), manually patch your game to 1.11 I think it is and use the plugy mod. It improves your stash and activates some bnet only game features. You can get an opengl wrapper (http://www.svenswrapper.de/english/) that will improve the lighting and performance of the game too.

Why 1.11 specifically? 1.13 is the best choice if you want to play "modern" (1.10+) Diablo 2 solo. I'd personally recommend playing 1.09, because the game was actually beatable without playing as a necromancer or tons of grinding.

How are you supposed to beat the game as an assassin or barbarian without grinding? The sorceress, paladin and druid admittedly can beat the game on hell, but it will take an absurd amount of time and you will get killed in a few hits by just about anything. I am of course assuming that you are playing single player, as otherwise you can abuse overpowered shit like spirit.

The same way you beat it as a Nec, Sor, Pal, Ama or Dru. You don't. Grinding is just a thing you do and if grinding isn't your thing the 'stabby shooty grabby looty' genre isn't for you.
I don't recall any successful Assassin or Barbarian runs that I personally had done but then again the last time I ran one of those I would've been 10.
