He tried a bit too hard in his own game, but I still like him. I think he can be legitimately cool in some of his appearances, with 06 probably being my favorite.

I don't like 06 as a game, but I think the story and music is fine. Shadow and Silver's stories anyway. All that Elise stuff in Sonic's was pretty stupid.

It's what killed comic books and seems to be what killed Sonic. They tried so hard to make Sonic dark and edgy and it just came off as comedic and foolish.

I was 15 years old when he was introduced.
I was never a huge fan of him. I recognized that he was laying on the edge a little too thick. Though at the time, i didn't know what to call it. I just had the sense that he needed to tone his shit down.
There's certainly a type of person who is attracted to edgy characters.

What will always baffle me is that Shadow was made to have a counterpart to Sonic for Adventure 2's Dark Story. They went through all the effort to make a new character with a lazy design and laughable back story when they had Metal Sonic 5 years prior.

Metal Sonic doesn't have the same abilities as Sonic. Shadow was supposed to be a straight up doppelganger so that Sonic could go all out against an enemy of equal strength. What does baffle me, though, is that he played that part for all of one game before they decided to make him pointless by making him Sonic's friend.
Shadow was designed for '90s babies into Eminem and Linkin Park.
