>teleportation
>disassembles my body into particles and then rebuilds it at another location

So technically every time I am teleporting I am dying and then an exact copy of myself is made at the location I wanted to teleport to? Technically for all intents and purposes it IS the Vault 111 dweller but it's not actually the same person.

What do you guys think?
>>
Oh boy it's time for high school philosophy with /v/
>>
It moves the particles, so its the same person. Its not like the Star Trek one where it just blows up the person who uses it and then rebuilds him out of whatever atoms are lying around at the destination.
>>
>>318211871
Oh look, a high-schooler projecting.

This site is 18 and up, bud.
>>
>>318211781
its actually the power of god that transports you to another location idiot dickhead
>>
>>318211903
how can it move particles through the ground though?
>>
not all teleportation is Star Trek teleportation
>>
>>318211781
Congratulations, you are Arthur C Clarke and about thirty different science-fiction writers about fifty years ago now.

Unfortunately, the time travel process works like teleportation, so you're actually dead and its a different but exact copy of Arthur C. Clarke. The irony wouldn't be lost on the copy if they knew this. It will haunt them though and thus complete the paradoxical loop by making them write up this very conundrum into a series of short stories. I like the one where Earth basically becomes one big homogenus lump so the alium bad guys who do this can use us to fight something WAY worse, but it actually turns out we're basically cannon fodder and they've been doing this millenia just to stem the ever-encroaching tide of darkness, and they're losing.
>>
>>318211781
>What do you guys think?

I think you're over-thinking it.
>>
>>318212091
It just works.
>>
>>318212091
trillions of particles literally pass through the entire planet every second, the ground doesn't stop anything
>>
>>318211985
The "teleporting kills you and makes a copy!" chesnut is one of the most overdone philosophical quandries in sci-fi
>>
>>318212110
What's that last one called? It sounds like it sprang from the mind of a well-adjusted individual.
>>
>>318212715
Can't remember, its in one of his series of short stories though.

I want to say it has "field" in the name somewhere. Sorry this isn't very helpful.
>>
>>318211781

The only people who have this "quandary" are retards who don't realise our body replaces its cells and overall matter many times throughout our lives.

You don't die with a body made of any the same particles you were born with.

No him, but I'm pretty sure how it works.
>>
>implying you know how the institute teleporters work

What if they warp your whole body to a new location by folding space?
>>
>>318215184
There's a difference between all of our cells being destroyed and us being reassembled, and a slow and gradual replacement of our cells over decades
>>
>>318215642
>>318215781
Nah that's bullshit. You'll still keep a few of the particles you're born with, the brain doesn't really replace itself you know.

>>
>>318215184
WRONG

If you have at least ONE old cell when another one is replaced, it still counts as you. The presence of older cells next to your new ones make a legit case.

Destroying "ALL" the atoms at once and re-assembling them at the other end means it's not you.
>>
>>318215184
Your brain does not swap out cells the way the rest of your body does.

Does this same logic kind of apply every 7 years or so after every single cell in my body has been replaced over that time? If I understand correctly, all the atoms that made up who I was 10 years ago are long gone now, I'm quite literally a new man, the old me is dead.

Is a completely restored first generation Mustang a '69 Mustang or a '13 Mustang?

>>318218362
uh, no, the only cells that have our real age are the neurons, everything else is replaced with a new (and slightly flawed) copy of it

One year ago the vast majority of cells inside your body were replaced by the ones you currently have, the you that you were one year ago is already dead.

>>318211781
Don't know.

Totally unrelated but I inherited an old axe from my grandfather. I replaced the head and was thinking about replacing the handle because its on the verge of breaking, anyone know of a good place to buy them online?

>>
>>318222440
Not that anon and obviously not a neurologist, but aren't memories basically just electrical signals? Even if the cells are being replaced, aren't the signals still cycling around, and thus persistent even if the cells that they once ran through aren't?

Not being snide or anything, just an idea.
>>
>>318222771
I think they explain it well, being that powerful has its own limitations, but us normies wouldn't understand.

It's more complicated than that.

I'm not a neurologist either and I don't know shit outside of basic highschool biology. But considering how complicated the human body is memory should be kept inside a bunch of synapses with different electric signals that are accessed simultaneously or something.

Stop arguing over this.

It just works.

the star trek thing is wrong. there isn't an atom in your body that was there a few years ago, yet you think you're the same person. whats the difference then? just because a transporter does it all at once?

>>318223412
To be fair a LOT of sci-fi has some race of beings that has transcended the normal interactions with space and time.
