That's very subjective. I personally love them but it's a very niche series.
Try looking atPolygon'svideo they posted a few months back showing off 30 minutes of gameplay from 4.1 - it features all four player classes played at a reasonably skillful level on normal difficulty, and shows what the game plays like.
The story is essentially non-existent for the series so you can jump in on whichever one you want, 4.1 is the most feature-complete and polished one yet though.
