The problem about this tyoe of characters is that its a cliche so bad, all the characters look the same because the point of this cliche is that your character is suppost to look like a normal people rather than having something unrealistic in him to make him unique.
At lest waifu characters, furfaggots, JRPG protags and some violent action heros have details that make them unique, there are even characters you wouldnt expect to exist like a glove, a worm in a suit or a skeleton.

"Relatability" as a whole is a really overrated concept.
I mean, sometimes it really is nice to read a story with a character you relate to, or read about a setting not unlike your own.

The idea is flawed, but does have some basic observational logic to it.
Looking at kids in school or even just adults in the workplace...they generally tend to find people they can group with (if they don't have friends there already).
This usually means you look, mostly unconsciously, for the first thing that makes you and then relatable: hey that's a white guy
Its how the school can have maybe 30 asians and yet somehow they mostly know each other.
Now i've always felt this to be generally bullshit for games/movies/etc. San Andreas is an amazing example for it. A game that forced you to be a black guy and yet it never stopped whites from buying it and enjoying the shit out of it.
Also has never stopped MMOs from having other races, and usually the "not human" has more than the humans

The more I think about it, the more I realize that most of the big, iconic, memorable video game protagonists really aren't all that relatable.
The only video game character I can think of who was a genuine attempt at creating a relatable video game character, a mirrored reflection of the player of whom one could see traits of the person playing the game, was Travis fucking Touchdown, and the game actually did a lot with that relatability.
No other game I can think of that really did that, aside from maybe The World Ends With You with Neku, although I never did beat that game.
Honestly most devs don't even try to create relatable characters anyway, they create badass power fantasies immature gamers can imprint themselves onto. Projection.
