Dr. Mario has different attributes but does all of the same things except for FLUDD.
Roy has different attributes but does all of the same things except for Shield-breaker.
Lucas has different attributes but does all of the same things except for PK Freeze and A-Moves.
Mewtwo shares A LOT with Lucario, since Lucario was largely based on Mewtwo to begin with.
Cloud shares A LOT with Ike. I'm a huge FFVII / Final Fantasy / Square-Enix fan, but I'm confident in the fact that they're similar because it's easy.
All of these characters have their own unique features, including Lucina and Dark Pit, but they were made extraordinarily similar because of how cost-effective it was to do. Why do you think so many characters share the same kinds of combos?

Alph shouldn't have even been an alt. Having him being a clone with Rock Pikmin would have been awesome. Koopalings shouldn't be in the game, Bowser Jr should just have color alts.
It's a free dessert (he wanted the roster to appear larger with no effort). He chose Dark Pit because him using Pit's Final Smash would be strange (actually it's just because he's biased towards his own creation and it was down to either him or Alph).
Really his inclusion makes some things shittier like trying to get complete stuff with every character but at least it took no development time. Honestly I think Palutena is a bigger show of bias since she's a full fledged character.

It makes Bowser Jr feel less important in his own character slot. It also doesn't make sense for the Koopalings, they never have used the Jr Clown Car before and just feel forcefully stapled on. They've also never wielded the paint brush before so having them turn into Shadow Mario makes no sense. They also look like shit, gangly Lemmy being the worst. It would have also been nice to have matching colors for Jr and his father.
