People don't buy video games anymore for games they buy it as a status symbol which is why (as much as people are going to call me a Nintendrone for this and summon the "always bringing up sony) is why the PS4 flew off of the shelves early on without any of the unique games you claim to be important. Instead the thing only had ports of last gen games that came out within two years of the release of the new system with the promise of power despite being a relatively small upgrade graphically. In fact the system touts less features than the PS3 media wise.
The rest of the gaming world HAS in fact changed but not for gaming but more in the sense that consoles are now seen as Armani bags for more than just women and gays.
Nintendo is the only one changing WITH gaming either introducing new IPs that are pure gameplay or adding different genres to existing franchises.

None of those franchises, with the exception of MGS, date back to the PSX/N64 era. And even MGS is a very different game.
And a lot of those franchises are slowly dying (Assassin's Creed, Halo, MGS), kind of proving my point.
And, of course, you can combine all the 1st party titles and 3rd party titles on the other systems. You have a wider variety. Nintendo systems basically only have Nintendo's games and they restrict themselves to narrow types of games. That's a major part of the problem.

Nintendo's advertising has been a joke for a long time now, the whole "Wii would like to play" campaign was like the last time they did a good job on advertising before Splatoon rolled around.
The Directs are great, but they don't exactly do a ton to reach people who aren't already interested in the kinds of games they'll be talking about there.
