mp2 felt a bit unnecessary but they kind of led you into the thought that max could have a happy ending with mona which made the story compelling. mp3 there's nothing that really motivates him to do anything except that he was getting paid to do it.

I don't want to defend the story of MP3 but I guess you're going to force me to.
His driving motivation in MP3 was his dissatisfaction with the failures of his past and a growing obsession with "righting" them in a scenario that would likely grant his festering death wish. I mean, it's stupid because he was coming to terms with things in 2 and then 3 is a complete backslide for his character and makes him into a tragic entity of nearly Grecian proportions, but it's there.
