It used to actually matter how you designed your creature, the amount of legs you used changed the locomotion. Then the team split between "cute" and "realistic" and "cute" won, resulting in appearances that were cosmetic, not functional.
The underwater stage completely cut from the game.
The DRM was horrible and only allowed you to install the game 3 times, ever.
The stages were all half-assed and the space stage especially annoying because your colonies are under attack constantly.
No flying parts.

Maxis and will wright presented a fantastical game known as spore where you work your way up the evolutionary ladder from microscopic plankton to spacefaring ayy lmaos. Showed and pomised a lot of things, like an aquatic stage and extremely detailed customization. Somewhere along the line the dev team split up into two groups, one for a cutesy child-like game, and the other for a more scientifically accurate god-sim. Cutesy team won, and tons of shit was removed and cut. Dissappointment ensued, and that's about it.
