If we're talking about Normal difficulty, you know, the NORMAL thing that most people would play, then I'd say red 9 is the best, seeing as it can one/two shot so many things with a single headshot reliably once upgraded. Most ammo efficient, and as a result, space saving gun.
Plus stock means no sway. Good for longer ranges as well.
It's a shame, because I REALLY want to like the punisher, but that thing is a piece of shit, even fully upgraded.

I always bought it, because why not have another gun with another ammo type, but used it only when there was some bullet sponge enemies, I had almost run out of handgun/shotgun ammo ammo or whn I had way too much TMP ammo and needed space

I just ran the numbers.
It costs 455,000 pesetas to upgrade the Broken Butterfly.
So with the same money, you could by 15 rocket launchers and have change left over.
The first fire power upgrade alone costs 25,000, which is only 5,000 less than a Rocket Launcher. Every subsequent upgrade actually costs more than a rocket launcher.
The mine thrower is amazing, I can never play without it now.

Pistol ammo is the most common, so I use the pistol throughout most of the game. Which is why I use the Red9, I bust out the shotgun mainly for its knockback against crowds and minibosses. I never really messed with sniper rifles I think they are a waste of inventory space to be honest. The TMP isn't that useful either, maybe for early on but it gets outclassed later when you upgrade other weapons.

You get six shots for free so that's enough for the grail knights. Even then, you could just use the semi-auto rifle instead because it's easier.
Even excluding the exclusive upgrade, the cost of upgrading just the firepower of the magnum to max is 210,000 pesetas. That's 7 rocket launchers. I don't even think I use the magnum seven times in a run.

Actually, let's count them:
1. Let's say you're a scrub and you use it for the twin garrador fight
2. Everyone always uses the free rocket launcher on Verdugo, so let's count the two El Gigante fight instead
3. Salazaar
4. U3
5. Krauser
6. Saddler
Those are all the situations where I would even potentially use the magnum. So even if I used the magnum and only upgraded firepower instead of going for the exclusive in every situation that calls for it, I'd still be better off using rocket launchers.
That isn't even taking into account how much more effective rocket launchers are.
