It's not so much that it's too small as it is why would you bother in the first place? There's no point in intentionally gimping yourself by playing an fps with a controller unless you like the challenge or something. Never mind that the touchpads are an awful idea and the button placement is really uncomfortable.
If you absolutely have to have a gamepad, there are far better and cheaper options already on the market, like a 360 or Bone controller.

I'm relatively sure there are drivers available for it. You probably need bluetooth in your computer though since I think the cables they come with only work as chargers not an actual connection.

depends. the pads seem to have dead space around the edges close to the buttons/stick, not sure if deliberate, but it effectively makes them smaller than the should be. sometimes it feels like your trying to squeeze extra mouse movement from the edges.
the buttons themselves seem fine, but the position is too far away from where you expect. keep pressing b or y when want a; find self looking down at controller to make sure.
biggest problem is no true native support, only kb/m/xi emulation, so you have 3 analog inputs but generally one of them is wasted for dpad duty. "native" support in games is a bullshit misnomer, what it really means is context sensitive mappings for gameplay vs menus etc.
as an xbox controller or a kb+m replacement, its not really good at either, it needs games that can use all 3 inputs at once, but a lot of them cant.
it could be great if games had direct access to the device itself, constraining it to emulation of other devices really holds it back from what it should be. unless valve want to push the thing forward as its own technical merits this thing has no future, all it would take for someone like like logitech to surpass them would be to drop the mostly useless left pad.

I have used a DS3 controller for years with Motioninjoy. It's an extra step, but to be fair, it's literally two clicks: open the program, press "Test vibration" and it's good to go. Just make sure to use the Xinput profile.

Protip: Motionjoy is malware that is installed at the driver level.
When you install the motionjoy driver it actually replaces the negative Windows USB host driver with it's own. The application tracks you for ad shit. And careful with removing it, it may not even revert back to the original USB host driver and then your Windows install is fucked untill you run a repair on it which I hope you have a PS/2 connecter on your mother board since all of your USB ports will be disabled if it happens.

After a few weeks, I absolutely love it. Though it takes a lot of getting used to.
I remember when I switched from SNES to N64 and I absolutely hated the analog stick. It was slippery and annoying and not accurate at all, and to top it off, the PS1 had TWO of the fuckers.
But I eventually got used to them, and realized how perfect they were for 3D motion.
The Steam Controller is the same shit in a different form. I'm getting used to it, and now seeing how much better it is than an analog stick, because it removes a barrier between your hands and the game. It's more like raw movement and it can be far more accurate in that sense than a stick. Its much more intuitive.
