I didn't mind the split maps so much because the big ones in the original felt like they tipped the scales in favor of scouts even further. The recycling of VC2 maps is what really annoyed me.

I felt the small maps made the game too cheesable. A single sniper spawning in 3 different corners of the map, killing one target and retreating again during one turn for just 3 CP just doesn't feel right.
In VC1 reinforcements cost time and CP, which made them pretty much pointless. In VC2/3 reinforcements are free and instant, which makes them just broken. I feel like there should have been some middle ground there.
I think part of the problem is that in VC1 you fight from one starting position to one destination, the VC2/3 way of doing reinforcements would have worked here. but in VC2/3 you fight in many places at once in parallel which makes the system broken because every character can effectively be in all places. Especially snipers because they don't need AP at all, the maps are small enough that you can snipe any target from your spawn point.

It only felt that way because scouts had ridiculous power. In 2/3 scouts do jack shit damage compared to 1, and can only feasibly take out light targets in one round such as other scouts, engineers, etc unless you had a unique weapon but those make anyone overpowered. Grenade rifle was also nerfed, which is a huge part of scout's power because cover meant jack shit to scouts which is absurd when even troopers gotta run all the way up to flamethrower.
Coupled with the ranking system, and the amazing orders that 2/3 never took as far because it was so game breaking you could beat Max with pure engineers, and that is why people cry about scouts all day.
Split maps was only better for slow classes in a very backwards manner. Being able to summon fencers, snipers, and gunners and have them frog hop around the map makes their low mobility pointless as a flaw since they get more than enough action from camps. The disadvantage of a fencer/lancer/sniper not being able to shoot back during the enemy's turn is completely gone thanks to base hopping ramped up to 11.
Mind you, in 2/3 Troopers also got buffs to their AP, so combined with leap frogging with the right setup like Commandos or the right guns a trooper makes scouts obsolete (was the case in 2, 3 scouts were only feasible if you were using fat ass or valks).
If VC3 wasn't on the PSP, it would be head and shoulders above VC1 gameplay wise.

It might be better depending on where you stand, but the internet wouldn't be arguing about it even now if it was head and shoulders above VC1. The flaws were not minimal, they just don't stand out because everyone got used to it in VC2 and VC3 improved upon everything except supporting cast talking to supporting cast talk so the impression is huge.

Didn't like any of the squad and a lot of their designs were terrible and clashed with the feeling of rebel/punishment squad.
Map design just wasn't that good and none of them were able to live up to the first's big maps (though a mix of huge and small would be best)
