Tri-Ace co-developed the sequels. Second game improves combat a lot, but there's framerate issues. Dungeons are probably better designed with actual puzzles and such, but have infinitely less production values placed on them.
I'd say overall the second's a better game, but not as polished. Still definitely worth getting if you liked the first. The third is kind of a mess and becomes a RTS-ARPG hybrid of sorts.

I've been playing the first game. I don't mind the monsters attacking on their own, but there's a lot of problems.
The first is that the combat isn't tactical whatsoever. Monsters kind of barely do unique things, but nothing imperative to combat or clever. RNG status effects, minor heals, etc.
Second is that I spend more time having to look at the lower screen than I do watching the fight, because of the dumb mini-games you do to actively participate in attacks.
I haven't gotten far enough to really lay into it, but whether you "catch" enemies or not seems kind of random, or requires you to look up what food to throw in their face, online.
Pokemon has a huge amount of problems itself, but it's already established since it's fucking old as shit now. The games usually play up nostalgia more than try to do anything clever or interesting.
It's no Pokemon killer. I think it's more that a lot of people are just sick of Pokemon and/or GameFreak for having no idea what to do with it. I will say the way monsters and the story is presented is way more entertaining. Pokemon stories just exist to merchandise things, and are rarely funny or engaging at all.
I don't know what the second game is like but supposedly they improved it a lot. The first is really unengaging because of the shitty combat.
