Emerald was lauded as one of the best Pokemon games and still is.
Emerald was my favorite Pokemon game for years. Hated Gen IV and V for various reasons. Even the remake of HG/SS wasn't as good as Emerald to me.
ORAS is the first Pokemon game since Emerald I actually enjoyed. The cel shaded design really added to the world. And somehow they also increased the battle speed over gen IV and V, despite having 3D graphics. The game also added a lot of new content to the main story. And the end game breeding system was also a huge improvement.
Pretty much the only thing I can see which is missing is the battle frontier. Not going to defend Game Freak for taking that out. But these people acting like ORAS is the worst Pokemon game ever just because of that? Please. Especially when people keep claiming Black/White was the best game ever and it had even worse single player content.

I was on 4chan when Emerald came out. That was also the days when Pokemon generals were the biggest threads on /v/. And Emerald was being literally pissed on endlessly. This was also the time when the biggest meme on /v/ was how much better Gold/Silver was over Gen III.
And little has changed. Right now, Pokemon fans are bitching about how everything in Gen VI is shit and Gen V was the best ever.

Every gen has its own collection of problems. You just have to weight the pros against the cons and decide which things bother you the least. For instance I have a hard time going back to DPPt because of the ridiculous amount of HM whoring.

Gen III is my favorite area as well. Gen II, IV and V had very boring world design in my opinion. A lot of 'go to city, do a quest, repeat'. I'm not going to claim Gen I and III were amazingly different and they clearly had a focus on towns as well. But they had a lot more side quests and non town related things going on.
It just felt like Gen I and III had a lot more variety and effort put into areas outside of towns. And both Gen I and III have multiple routes with water so I never got people complaining about Gen III having too much water. Its especially stupid when people complain about water in the ORAS remakes since they give you a boat to avoid it completely.
Pokemon fans just love to complain it seems. Not that I can blame them. Their series will never really change as much as it should.

Pretty much everything but the actual meat of the game was spot on. The music was top notch, graphics were pretty decent, and the new designs are great.
If they had stuck to the same formula as what to HG/SS did then it would've been a better game. I understand the whole
