Doubtful, since I cleared all the Chalice Dungeons (including the defiled ones, which are pretty hard, but fair), killed Ebrietas, etc. I've also completed every other true Souls game wih ease (Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1, skipped Dark Souls 2).
This Ludwig boss is just badly designed and from what I've heard, the other bosses are just as bad. I think I'll stick with the main game and just let the DLC untouched. This boss soured the experience.

I'm level 100, on NG+. It's impossible at that level, with summon or no summon. I've heard some people discovered an exploit where you get to kill Ludwig before he gets into the 2nd phase, so my guess is most people who killed him managed to do some bullshit like this or something that wasn't discovered yet. Or they were waaaaaaay overleveled.
Anyway, I'm not going to start cheating, so I decided to ignore the DLC for now, until From Software patches it or something. The game is not respecting my time or my money the way it is right now, which is a shame.

Every boss in this game has a set of moves that you can memorize, so you complaining that the encounters are repetitive is a moot point.
His attacks were completely different in timing to other bosses in the game, and you'd know that if you didn't play through it with an overleveled character on any of the NGs.
He even has 3 phases that he goes through with cinematics and a score change.

It has one area that's been altered but even that small area is neat to explore. The rest of the DLC is very different. The fights are awesome. If you don't like it fine. I'm sorry. Old Hunters is great DLC. It is absolutely "worth" $20. The new areas are compelling to explore, tell a neat back story, and the weapons are neat variations on weapons we have, but with just enough flavor to be compelling as unique weapons and not palette swaps. I'm almost tempted to do NG++ run. Especially since they added some summons for bosses.

Really, the only attacks that were troublesome for me were his leap and the charge. Just run for about three seconds when he jumps and maybe jump yourself. He cocks his shoulder leg back, touches the round with his claw and roars for the charge, you can get away by rolling twice, once if you time it perfect.

I like BB... a lot. A whole lot. But this is true. There's an unwillingness to admit that Soul's series difficulty can reasonably be considered obnoxious without adding that much to the gameplay. yes, there is that thrill of victory, but there is the agony of defeat and fighting a boss for the nth time. If the fighting, world, and story are good and compelling then they are that. Do you need to jack the difficulty up and intentionally screw with the player so it can be "git gud?" Is a very high level of difficulty the new "fetch quests to claim the game is OVER 50 HOURS!"
There is a nice smug satisfaction to DS and beating it. And once you beat a boss you think "why did I think X was hard?" But its cause you learned their moves inside and out and finally got patient and learned to not go for more than 3 hits. But that doesn't make the game good. And there is a reasonable argument to be made that the difficulty can actually distract from the other very positive qualities in the game.

Don't give up OP, the DLC gets harder later on but much better at the same time, the third boss is IMO one of the most amazing boss fights ever, almost on the same level as Gerhman. I stopped playing there so don't know about the rest.

As someone who platinumed Bloodborne including DLC, I do think much of the difficulty of The Old Hunters is inflated. Common enemies hit like a truck and are capable of killing even high level players in two or three hits while being damage sponges themselves, and the bosses are far worse. Also, there's little payoff in terms of Blood Echoes.
I welcome a challenge, but I don't feel like I outskilled some of the bosses when I beat them. It was more like I was beating my head against the wall repeatedly and at some point the wall decided to give in.
As much as I love the DLC, From Software didn't really think this through. You get all those dope weapons you can't really use since you're probably lacking high level upgrade materials to make them viable in such a tough environment. And you can't use them otherwise since chances are that there's not much left of the main game to play.

Just dodge for fuck's sake, his attacks are practically telegraphed ahead especially in his second form. When he does that charged wave attack, stick near him and run/dodge to the side when he brings the sword down to evade it. It's much more dangerous to run away from the attack as it spreads out.
Not that hard, feels more like you're fighting against a rhythm game, not to mention, some of his attacks miss when you're really close to him.
