To be fair, any intelligent alien species out there probably would look similar to humans and live on a planet similar to Earth.
A lot of specific factors have to come together in order for a planet to support life. The basic nature and ecosystem of a planet that supports intelligent life can only vary so much before it's no longer adequate to support life. Earth is one of the few examples in the universe where it actually worked. Possibly the only example. It's only logical to assume that any other planet to support intelligent life would exist on similar terms and conditions as Earth and thus would be a very similar planet overall.

Think about it like this: there are insects, reptiles, birds, mammals, amphibians, and even fish that at least partially exploit air, land and sea on Earth. To do this, a degree of convergent evolution leads them to have similar structures: bats, flies, pterosaurs, and penguins all have "wings", but those wings are quite varied in every factor other than that they're appendages that allow flight/propulsion.
It'd logically have to be along the same lines for human-tier intelligent species. They couldn't be too big or too small because the former means too much time eating and the latter means not enough mass, they'd obviously need dense, high-volume cerebral matter, but also probative appendages and the capacity to communicate complexly in order to gather and pass-on new information.
Other traits would be secondary, but still important, such as being omnivorous benefiting survival capacity, and not having built-in defense systems that are too good in order to necessitate tool building.
These are things that would need to be the case in order for a human-tier intelligence to rise, thrive, and then dominate a planet like we have regardless of the alien's biosphere.

It's true that expressiveness is necessary to empathize well with a character, but it's possible to make almost any character design express emotions in a fashion similar to the way humans do, such as with WALL-E. Or as another example, the Ents from the Lord of the Rings.
There's a difference between giving a character human traits in order to allow the audience to empathize better with them, and restricting all player characters to only be carbon-copies of humans with blue/green/whatever color skin.
