You can't make maps, it's automap only which means for some quests like many-headed demon's with a book that ask you to map every square you will be stepping in every single one of them

If anything, I've been seeing a lot more love of SJ in the past year or two than before that. In the past (let's say before SMT4) the overwhelming opinion among western fans seemed to be that Nocturne was the heretical-to-criticize GOAT and SJ was kind of a fun throwback to older dungeon crawler style games but had flaws like worse battle and demon fusion systems.

It's a little more complicated than that; Speec Marine is strong, but he becomes mediocre by the end of the game. The big problem? Enemies and bosses are fucking vicious by the end of the game, and if speec dies you game over. By the end of the game I found myself defending more than any other action, since one wrong move and I would die or be close to dying. It's just not worth it when you only deal "ok" damage.
Of course it also doesn't help that you can fuse some hugely OP demons thanks to Sources.

Definitely rough around the edges since it's the first game, but still a very enjoyable game. A lot of anons seem to recommend skipping it and starting with later games, but if you end up enjoying the series I don't see why you wouldn't/couldn't also enjoy EO1, or at least checking out just how fucked class balance was in the first game and how badly the lack of crabwalking and limited mapping options can irritate them. (Didn't ruin it for me.)

This one might be the most overlooked one, really. People complain about class balance here as well, but it's not like a party is suddenly totally unviable if you decided to include a Landsknecht instead of a Ronin, it's just gonna take a bit more work, plenty of party comps are completely viable. Other complaints against the game are nitpicky ones like dodgier RNG in evasion/hit rate and confusing skill trees, but it seems like personal opinion to me. EO2 really settled the series into the formula the later games followed.

'the weird one', they really tried shaking things up with this game (while still being a lot like EO1&2). Classes are all-new with ever stranger skills and gimmicks, though many still fill certain archetypes. Additional content added with sea quests. A bangin' soundtrack. People often say 3 is their favourite while also acknowledging that it isn't perfect (EO3's class balance might really be the worst in series)

new platform, potential new audience, same old but with new coat of paint and a few QoL additions. I started out with EO4 as I imagine a lo of other people did, and I do think it was the best introduction to the series. It's definitely the easiest, but I'm not going to fault it for only that. It builds on the changes that EO3 brought about with the overworld and diminished importance of the main labyrinth (now it's divided even more clearly into separate locations and several small side labyrinths). Classes try to stay fresh despite many old ones returning in name.
Some new classes with new gimmicks too. Subclassing returns with a few adjustments. I think EO4 really finally nails gameplay variety in the sense that stuff like binds and ailments find use on your side of the battlefield besides a couple exceptions in the past games, and various party comps being totally equally viable instead of "more difficult, but still doable".

The good: stuff like faster battle speeds/dungeon crawling bringing further QoL improvements, the whole of EO1 getting revamped from dungeon layouts to enemies and their battle behaviour, to player classes/their skills/skill tree layouts, plus stuff like a seriously challenging Expert difficulty. The bad: story mode is kinda lukewarm, there's exclusive content locked behind it and grimoires suck. Good game slightly soured by bad execution of some ideas.

facelift of the Untold subseries all around, largely fixing any problems the first one might have had (grimoires). How this couldn't be the best EO game yet is beyond me, but some people will hold the remake status against it.
