See, here's the rub.
Way back when this first came out in the olden days of early this last September, it wasn't all that well known. A couple people here played it, and liked what they played. They felt the story was good, the characterizations were interesting, and the gameplay was at least different enough from standard fare to be interesting. This number of people was small, but you'd have threads up here saying "hey, this is actually pretty good" and "I rather enjoy the music", and yes, even one or two talking about jokes in the game they thought were funny.
However, it soon became clear that this was a divisive game. Among the people who played it, it seemed that they either rather liked it, or were ambivalent towards it. People didn't outright think of it as a bad game, but at most it didn't really do things for them. However, it was cheap enough, and a lot of people had at least a part of it they liked, so it continued to rise in popularity.
What ended up killing it were two factors.
1. People have differing opinions, and
2. It became very popular.
When you combine the two, you have people out there (like yourself) who think its ok, but nothing special listening to people rave about the game like its the second coming of jesus christ. This makes people question their own enjoyment of the game, eventually turning them off from the game because they just don't see what other people do. However, the fact that some people like a game they don't is infuriating for some people, so rather than just say it is "just ok", some people turned to outright hatred of the game. Of course, others also came to this same conclusion even without playing it, simply because they've heard people praising it so much (and yes, partially because parts of the fanbase are not very good at all), don't see the big deal, and are now vehemently against it
TLDR; People have different opinions, and there is no one true GOTY for everybody, especially not for something divisive
