Reduce your spending as far as you feel comfortable with. Bear in mind that hedonic adaptation will make your limit appear closer than it actually is.
Reducing spending is easier that getting a raise, as you have little control over the second one, but absolute over the first.
Keep an emergency fund (~3-6 months life expenses) and invest the surplus in a broadly diversified, low-TER index fund.
Try to keep costs at a minimum, including taxes. Take advantage of special accounts that might be available to you as a citizen of your country (401(k) in the US, ISA in the UK, TFSA in Canada, etc.)
