Keifer worked really well, Kojima just implemented the character poorly.
Why he put 90% of Snake's dialogue into tapes I can't figure out. Not only was he shunting his star's lines into optional content, but he forced the quality of the recordings to be degraded through filters to match the context of the tapes.

Kiefer did the best with the material he was given. The truth is that the game has some of the hammiest, cheesiest dialogue ever written. It's classic Kojima, really, and it works in the context of the other MGS games that show more self awareness and referential humor, but MGSV made it clear that it wants to be taken seriously -- this is SERIOUS metal gear! Show me this. People like to say this on here and can't back it up, guess why? It can't be backed up. I've heard these "tons of cut lines" on that SoundCloud page everyone loves to link, and there were literally like 5 lines cut from the game and they're all just like single lines like you're fired or different versions of stand down and more grunts. They didn't cut his dialog. Quit saying that.
