I believe what he means by "gritty" is a detailed and intricate art style in combination with a dark color pallet. As well as a general "darker" atmosphere than, say, happy go lucky stylized cel shaded cartoon Link.
I mean, Dark Souls has a similar aesthetic to TP and it's plenty gritty.
