This is very deep, nuanced writing and I'm not surprised you plebs can't appreciate it.
I just feel so jipped.
I made an unbalanced character, like I usually do. Putting most of my Special points in Charisma and Intelligence.
I saw that the world had few checks and I didn't really think about the fact that they had all been charisma up to the point. Before I got to the institute, I spent time leveling my intelligence to 10 so I could pass all intelligence checks I assumed there would be when you speak to the scientists of the institute.
To my dismay there is not one. The scientists in the institute treat me the same as if I had put nothing into intelligence at all. Like, when you have to get the Berylium core, the only option I get is to dumbfoundedly say "wut r berylium core?" and the science lady just dismisses me by saying "you wouldn't understand" and I'm just sitting there with my genius level IQ character that obviously could understand but isn't given the chance to because of bethesda's lazy game design.
Like don't you think having 10 INT should have some minor effect on how they threat you. I swear to fucking god, Every science character treats me like an idiot even though I've fucking leveled my character to do these things.
There is literally one way to play this game and that is to play it as a shooter with a story twist. Fucking hell, I'm just so disappointed.

They rolled all the skills into the Special. I assumed this was an RPG where there was more than one way to solve puzzles and interact but not even the CHR checks do anything.
When you get to goodneighbor, you have a check to stop that guy from trying to take your money and I passed it, but hancock still fucking killed him.
Every CHR check is literally inconsequential. They all reveal something of minor importance that has no in game significance.

It's a good point, as well, and avoids the usual "RPG vs. not an RPG" argument that usually bogs these threads down. The original Fallouts were more like simulations, creating elaborate and internally-consistent settings where the player's actions generated actual consequences and where surviving was an actual challenge. The Bethesda games and sandboxes where you can "DO ANYTHING" with no consequences whatsoever.

What I do prefer from Ulysses over Serana is that he has a shitload of backstory, BEFORE even seeing him in person. Every DLC has his mark. You never hear about Serana before her appearance.
And it's not because Beth manages to write one mildy interesting companion that suddenly they're good, just like one antagonist with an imperfect writing doesn't make Obsidian terrible.
Overrall, Obsidian wrote loads of memorable characters while Beth wrote few.

Basically instead of trying making you feel bad because you did something you were railroaded into doing, Bioware points out that your enemy was railroaded into doing something terrible as well. And that's really the best way to handle railroading because if you can't give the player much agency, you can at least make the player look good in comparison to the other characters. It's just an illusion but at least they were fucking trying. Bethesda stopped trying a long time ago.

If you spend the night at the Junktown hotel, when you wake up a guy will be holding a hooker hostage in the next room.
Among other things, you can talk him out of it, offer him money, or sneak up behind him and knock him out with a physical attack.
If you talk him out of it, you have to pass three speech checks in three different conversations. If you save in between the conversations, you automatically fail every time you reload your save, and you have to either kill him or revert to an old save. A nasty, but fun little trick.

Nerd Rage lets you cheese through a lot of stuff you normally wouldn't be able to, and all the crit skills in the luck tree completely trivialize the game. Grim Reaper's Sprint isn't as broken as it was in 3 but it's still nice to have.
Charisma isn't that great unless you're playing with settlements, though.

the guy asks me to take care of cooke
I talk to cooke and he agrees to stop fucking the guys wife. further into the dialogue he asks me about a deal in which he wants to bust some chem dealers.
not even an option to say no other than to kill cooke
so I decide to just end the dialogue by leaving, but the quest doesn't update, and I can't talk with Pembroke so I do this chem deal.
For some reason I can take Pembroke with me to this quest. So we go to the shootout and kill the guys, but Cooke dies during the shooting. I end the quest at pembroke that Cooke will make no problems anymore, but that I had to kill him.
This whole questline was a new level of dumb.

Compare to Fallout 3 where 10 in all stats and 100 in all skills is as easy as "Pick Gifted, take 8 Intelligence, take Comprehension early on, and don't pick up any SPECIAL bobbleheads until you get Almost Perfect"
Then compare to NV where the number of skill books is DRASTICALLY reduced and there aren't any fucking bobbleheads.
