This is logical. However the most recent example of this being Fallout 4, is incorrect.
For instance Doom 3 is a Good game, just not worthy of the Doom name, if it had a different name slapped onto it it would actually be remembered fondly.
Fallout 4 however, is a terrible game. Both as a standalone game and a fallout game. If it didn't have the Fallout name attached to it, it would be rightfully panned and because it does have the Fallout name attached to it, everyone is clambering over themselves to give excuses as to why it isn't as bad as it is,

For the longest time in the industry, that was genuinely true. Before we had shit like the hype machine, a game series' success lived or died by the current game's sales. Doesn't matter how much shit was set up for game 3, if game 2 sells no copies, a company has no reason to continue spending money to keep bringing it over.
That isn't true much anymore because quite honestly the hype machine can no longer be stopped, or even slowed down for that matter. A game is pretty much gauranteed to sell well as long as you don't pull everything DmC did pre-release. And even THAT still managed to sell 1.1 million copies.
