I went in completely dry myself and I never felt lost at all. There's a point near the start of the game where a character grills you about your experience in the past games, so I felt a bit in the dark there. But other than that, it was fine.

You forget that Geralt is only in his 90s in the Witcher games. That is young for witcher's. Vessemir is likely in his mid-to-late 200s and he's far from decrepit, feeble and near a death brought on by old age. If Geralt were to retire at his age and live out in the middle of kurwaville, nowhere he would eventually lose his mind. Even if the marriage with Yen were to last until death separated him, he could very well outlive Yennifers as mages aren't immortal and he will certainly outlive ciri, and everyone else he's ever loved. He'd just wind up alone again.
I know it's picturesque but Geralt trying to find happiness in a domesticated life is futile. He never spent much more than a year at a time with Yennifers before he got wanderlust and a call to his profession. Geralt's true calling is like that of all witcher's. To die alone and forgotten, killed by a monster he was hunting for a pouch of coins.

If I remember correctly the oldest living human mage in the books is around 300, assuming Yen even makes it to that a witcher with no danger to his life can outlive that.
Another thing is that while sorceress are beautiful even until the day they die of old age, witcher's still age, even if very slow. When year 150 of their marriage runs around and Yen is looking fine as hell while Geralt is looking like a 65 year-old, do you really think Yen would stick around?

Pretty sure that isn't how it works. Otherwise every rich noble in the game would just buy their longevity. I think the consumer of the potion needs to be magical themselves, and while ciri is magical, that magic is completely untamed and dangerous. Possible though, if ciri were to decide to try to become a sorceress.
