It's more in the spirit of GalCiv. Colonize systems, build on planets, progress science, etc. After playing a few campaigns you'll start to realize that it's actually pretty shallow, but it's streamlined and pleasant. Easily worth the seven bucks.
For what it's worth, I'm a big fan of 4x and I've definitely gotten more playtime out of Endless Legend, but I like Endless Space more. It's just pleasant.

It's battle system is like Etrian Odyssey mixed with the grid positioning of something like suikoden or trails in the sky, it takes the old school rpg mechanics of previous wizardry games and puts it in a fully realized 3d world full of old school dungeons and quests with a customizable party and deep and difficult battle system. Amazing game if you like old school rpgs.
