I run the gambit with about 20 different heroes in dota.
If I had had the choice to use more than just the handful of champions I could afford back when I played League, then you can bet your ass I would have rotated through the champion pool.
All those times someone went Tryndamere and I had no effective hero counter to him, but had to top lane as it was the only slot left.
Or when someone chose Wukong, I didn't have Renekton to counter him.
And being forced into jungle without a jungler sucked too.
Locking tons of characters behind a paywall if you don't wanna grindwall is gay. And so is giving people with a level advantage and playtime advantage in the form of raw stats. I never managed to fill up a single rune page because the runes were so ungodly expensive, and you only get two of those pages too, you can either cough up five bucks for more rune pages or you get to choose between your tank runepage and your mage runepage when you go adc.
League is pay 2 win as fuck, and Riot is a bunch of greedy fuckers as well. At least Valve gives you a slow trickle of custom equipment, Riot wants you to pay 5 bucks for a single skin and fuck you if you're not paying for it.

Poppy wasn't terrible in lane, she just had no escape and had a situational stun making her easy to gank.
As far as laning actually went, her passive prevented you from bursting her and her skills let her hit like a truck even at level 1 if she took devastating blow.

At 70 base damage assuming abilities and items and shit she walks up, autos you, then Qs you for 160 + 40-70 (depending on health) magic damage. This is on an 8 second cooldown. And it stays at 8% max health the whole game, she can then go on to level anything else she wants and still hit you for massive damage since it scales 100% with AD even at rank 1.
She was never a bad laner at all. She's incredibly tanky and does tons of damage as she is. But she doesn't fit the meta at all and is easy to shut down early, unlike most top laners that can go 0/5/0 and still walk into other lanes and kill people.

If you got a big champ, one of the 6300 ones, then you definitely don't have a full rune page or all the starting heroes.
Well past level 30 when you can enter ranked and leave the "tutorial" you're still going to be missing 80+ champs and/or a third rune page. The game is one of the grinding-est games out there. You get 80 points on average, since you'll lose roughly half your games, and half of the ones you win will be over by 20 minutes which nets you less IP.
Cheap champs are 350, expensive ones 6300, rune pages 6300 a pop. Filling out a rune page ranges from 5000-10000. If you somehow win ALL your games and they don't end at 20 minutes and get an average of 200IP each game, which is of course impossible, you still have to play hundreds upon hundreds of games to reach the same playing field as most of rest of the League playerbase as at. Just for a chance at a fair fight.

I miss the old Ult since it made Poppy an effective 1v5 champion also disregard turrets and shit. Other than that I think it's pretty good, her Q needs to be mastered and the skill cap is higher now.
