It's pretty stale and harmless so far.
I still think Gates of Infinity had the most interesting story layout. It runs inverse to the other games, where things start off as bad as possible and gets happier with time. During the first hours of gameplay you're lied to and betrayed by almost everyone you meet, including the goddamn narrator. Gurrdurr tries to break your will and make you his slave, your partner is a depressed sod, Virizon just plain doesn't like other people etc.
Meanwhile, in SPM you spend the first 4 hours going to school. That's it.

I think I didn't mind the slow starting plot (By PMD standards, which is saying A LOT) in Gates too much because I liked the characters. It felt more of a drag in Explorers, since, in spite of more meatier things happening earlier on, such as the pedo and hinting early what was to come, the guild members and partner just didn't do anything for me aside from a laugh or two from Wigglytuff
Gate's problem mostly stemmed from forgetting show don't tell a lot. We were told that it was a miserable world, but Post Town didn't look any worse off than any real life town, so it fell flat there.

So we have no house? We'll work together to get one at the start, and at the end of the story, saving the world also felt like a common goal. MC was brought inalongside other humansto stop the pokemon world from dying. The thing that threatening everything feeds of negative emotions, and the partner is trying to reduce that by making this paradise town thing, so it was sort of related, at least thematically. Just too bad that forgetting show don't tell and the parroting dialogue really dented things.
Splitting up the stories ala Explorers is technically fine, but the partner's story was an absolute bore. Things at least got better after the expedition was over, and the special episodes breathed life into characters I previously never cared for.

Not really. Hackers found translation files in the NA version. They are postponing release on purpose because of paper jam.
The game gives you a level 55 salamence super early on (I was level 12, and it's a required mission for progression), and follows it up with other really powerful Pokemon soon after (I also have Tyranitar and Dragonite, among others, and am at level 20). Then, the ones that aren't OP as shit feel pointless to bring along, since I know I'll eventually get their evolutions, so why bother? I'm so conflicted.

uh no, the writing is definitely the best in the series, a huge step up from the toddler dialogue in the explorer games
How long is the epilogue? Sky had a really long one (Graduation all the way to the Darkrai event) while Gates's was incredibly short (AlthoughHaving the main character stay away and playing as the partner made the ending feel like less of a cop out, so it was pretty damn good while it lasted)
