It's a rogue-like series without permadeath but still having high penalties for dying. Usually localized ones are based around an existing franchise (Pokemon, Etrian, Final Fantasy) and how good the game is depends on how well that franchises mechanics mesh with the rogue-like elements.
In cases like Etrian it ends badly because you can't do Etrians map-making and memorizing patrol routes with randomly generated floors. In cases like Pokemon it goes well and has become my favorite game from both franchises.

Bought this on impulse after only playing a bit of explorers of darkness years ago that I borrowed from a friend. At chapter 6 just rescued ampharos and gotta say I'm really regretting picking this up.
Just my 2¢:
Tutorial is wayy too long. Multiple hours in and still can't recruit people. Enemies have like 2x or more health than me and every random scrub fight feels like I'm right on the brink of losing. Have to spam items in boss fights just to have a chance. The only heal item so far oran berry is super rare but there's tons of stupid wand and orb shit. Starters + riolu being the only available starting pokemon was also pretty stupid. They could have just chosen a bunch of gen 6 pokemon or one from every type but no they have to re-use the same shit that you have to pick in the main games.
Answered the questions and got mudkip and riolu which sucks because all of the dungeons up to now have been completely anti-water type full of grass types. The bee dungeon was the worst filled with fucking shroomish that just spam confusion/sleep powder/paralysis and absorb and leech seed and skiddo with their huge range vine whip doing over half my health in damage. Even the stupid poliwrath dungeon which was clearly supposed to be like a pond or something was full of electric types. And fucking luxio that can 1hko doing over 100 damage when I have less than 60 health.
The whole game seems like it's just going to be tediously grindy and boring. There's too many features that make things needlessly complicated like the armbands and enema crystals and needing to upgrade your attacks. This really doesn't feel like a pokemon game tbqh fa.m. If you're thinking about getting it because you like the pokemon main games then think twice.
Honestly I would have preferred they revived the pokemon ranger games instead of this.

So what are the improvements over Explorers of Sky? I liked that game but it didn't make me a fan of the genre in particular. Good story and soundtrack, but way too easy and breaking the game isn't as fun.
What's the postgame like? Red/Blue rescue team was godly. All of those 99 floor dungeons were so comfy. Joyous Tower, Buried Relic, Purity Forest. Explorers of Time/Darkness were okay, but the postgame didn't feel as strong.

There was a true multiplayer in GtI. You had to take on a high level pokemon on one floor in a dungeon. It sucked because you used 1 move, then they used 1 move, all with wireless connectivity timing. Shit was super slow. Imagine doing an actual dungeon like that.

Relax I'm just putting out there what I think about the game as someone who hasn't really played the others since people are asking about it.
It's not even "get gud" as much as "get lucky". Not getting gangbanged by multiple shroomish at once is the only way I got through the bee dungeon.
Spamming wands and orbs is exactly what makes it not feel like a pokemon game, is what I'm saying. Pokemon is about using pokemon, not just pelting the enemy with random garbage. Sure this is a mystery dungeon game and not a mainline pokemon game but still.

well, mainline pokemon games had berries, held items, potions, pokeballs, whistles, dolls, and other items you could use to win a fight with. it's not like Items is all of the sudden a brand new concept in pokemon.

Eventually gave myself Earthquake, enhanced my Attack up Looplet with like three Emola ups, found Type Bulldozer and just destroyed everything in my path. Nothing was left standing.
