How in God's name did he travel from the West Coast to the East Coast?

I could kinda understand the BoS managing it, and definitely the Enclave. But a random merc being able to cross Post-Nuclear U.S.A? What the fuck.

West Coast and East Coast should be totally seperate, nobody on the East Coast should know what the fuck the NCR is apart from older members of the Brotherhood or Scribes, and nobody on the West Coast should know about the Institue or Synths other than House.

Why didn't they just use Coursers for their work then?

Bethesda doesn't know the lore of the universe they're working in, alternatively they retconned the massive fucking super storms that cover the middle of America.

>>317491272
Well a bunch of potato farmers with horse drawn carriages did it 150 years ago. I imagine a tough guy with cybernetics could pull it off. Head to NorCal then cut east. No desert, probably no radiation, plenty of food growing.

Plus just because we don't see cars working doesn't mean they don't. BoS has vertibirds going again. It's reasonable to assume there are caravans of vehicles Mad Max style making the trek to trade. In fact it's logical. How else would either side know anything? BoS and the Enclave wouldn't waste the resources to travel 3000 miles on a whim.

Nobody walks 12 hours a day for 3 months straight though. It was also implied he had settled down numerous times on the way. He also traveled away after his family died, which I just assume he was in his early 20s when ti happened, and he then reached Boston in his mid 30s. From what I understand the components and mechanisms that make up power armor are not only incredibly complex, but very rare. If raiders are raiding to survive and eat and slam drugs all day, it's weird that they'd be able to master this top of the line pre-war technology.

It's more than just a suit of metal, after all, and even the NCR couldn't repurpose whole suits.

You also need special training just to wear the armor and function, at least I think?

Not going through power armor training doesn't prevent you from entering a power armor.
You just don't know how to operate it properly.
And you can learn through trial and error.
And yes, the big factions have the knowledge to repair the more intricate parts of the power armor.
And what materials, you can slap pretty much anything on the power armor frame to provide protection.
>>
Kellogg deserved more buildup
>>
>>317496114
It follows the canon more than any of the other Fallout games have.
The only thing that contradicts the canon is the fact that Power Armor needs fusion cores, instead of having a self sustaining power source that lasts forever, which was obviously changed this time for sake of balancing and gameplay.

Yeah, making ultra-rare military suits that require extensive training to even use and protect you from the hazards of the wasteland (you know, those environments that drive the setting and make it unique) as common as any other equipment definitely doesn't completely trivialize the entire Fallout setting (and the 'special' factor of power armor) at all!

Well, we know where at least some of the (Swamp) Yankee Ingenuity of the Old United States went, then. (So to speak.)

And it is actually more of an accomplishment than it initially appears to be. Power Armor is quite complex and even just patching in scrap metal around what can't be replaced and getting the servos working at all is something.

It's still even more of a piece of shit than T-45d, but realistically, you would be somewhat invincible to a lot of threats in it, if severely suffering from tunnel vision and having badly compromised maneuverability and hearing besides.

ITT:Fallout 3 babbies arguing with people who read the wiki entries on Fallout 1/2

This thread is awful, you niggers need to read up on your lore.

First off, the Midwest DOES have mile wide radioactive storms, but it's not some huge kill-wall spanning the middle of the U.S.A. Tactics is technically semi-canon and that occured in the Midwest. Van Buren, which locations have been made canon via New Vegas was also touching on the Midwest and it was fine. As others have said, even if there was a killwall you could have just gone around it.

It would have been extremely difficult and probably would have taken many, many years for Kellogg to cross the U.S.A and there probably wasn't much motivation to keep walking endlessly across the Wasteland to parts unknown, but it's possible. It's dumb, but possible.

Also, cars are a thing in the post-war Fallout world. You literally build one in Fallout 2 and it's implied there are others. A few years before the Great War, micro-fusion technology emerged in the U.S.A as a renewable power source, but was rare and very, very expensive. One of the greatest ironies of Fallout being that if the war started a decade later, it's possible the resource crisis might have been solved or at the very least greatly lessened. The canonicity of this has been toyed with by Bethesda, who put mircofusion powered cars all over the place and whatnot, but that's besides the point.

Faggots need to lrn2lore

Why do so many of you assume people in the Wasteland are fucking retarded and cannot repair any transportation technology?

There are androids with advanced AI walking around, what makes you think somebody can't repair a damn car or plane? The fact some transportation is powered by nuclear sources just means they'd be usable for hundreds of years. A nuclear powered car left on the side of the road wouldn't suddenly stop fucking working.

Just because one person can fuck off to somewhere better doesn't mean the rest of his group can.
And the power armor doesn't provide sustenance so he would still need food and water for the trip.
Food shortage doesn't correlate with power armor scarcity.

Bullshit. Tornadoes do not conveniently position themselves vertically across a country like a mountain range.

>>
>People angry at lore in Fallout 4
>Then proceed to show that they know jack shit about the country and the lore.

Superstorms were introduced in Tactics and are only mentioned there, barring stuff with the Great Divide. Besides the fact that it's not canon, Tactics never explicitly said that the storms encompass all of central America from north to south, or that they were 100% constant.

A scraggly ghoul-like FEV mutant managed to crawl across the country with a tree sprouting from his head.

NCR is implied to have working railways. While they obviously don't extend past Vegas, at least by Fallout 4, it shows that the railroads are definitely repairable and serviceable.

The world isn't supposed to have horses, but they showed up in that New Vegas prequel comic when NCR scouts rode them.

There's plenty of stuff that can be used to justify his journey, and even more room for ass-pulls by Bethesda if they wanted to.

One of John Cassidy's floats is, "I hear they got twisters miles wide in the Midwest. It's a big ol' radioactive dustbowl now."

Roger Zelazny's "Damnation Alley" takes place in the (now usual) post-apocalyptic USA. Extreme weather, "twisters miles wide" etc., occur in the Midwest, earning it the name "Damnation Alley."

The original short story was published in 1967, expanded into a novel in 1969, followed by a movie in 1977.

If there was little to no gas by the point of the war then it would make sense that the only cars around are fusion cars. The fusion cars may only be owned by the rich, but that just means only the rich actually have cars. So I think Bethesda could make an argument for only fusion cars. As for the amount of them, wasn't pre-war supposed to be a nuclear utopia nearly? So most of the population would be "rich", meaning most people have fusion cars, making them common around the world.

Parts of tactics happened, pretty much anything to do with Cheyenne mountain would make the Brotherhood too OP for anything other than their own dedicated series. Even if they blew up the Calculator there was a treasure trove of tech in that place.

Using the "send the soft-touch faction on a butchers crusade against a broken army" reasoning for why the brotherhood are on he east coast, and why there's two factions of them in Washington makes sense. So all you need to do is retcon the blimp crash and say those blimps got to the east coast fine and dandy and you can ignore the whole storyline of tactics.

>"The Dust Bowl, also known as the Dirty Thirties, was a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the US and Canadian prairies during the 1930s; severe drought and a failure to apply dryland farming methods to prevent wind erosion (the Aeolian processes) caused the phenomenon. The drought came in three waves, 1934, 1936, and 1939–40, but some regions of the high plains experienced drought conditions for as many as eight years. With insufficient understanding of the ecology of the plains, farmers had conducted extensive deep plowing of the virgin topsoil of the Great Plains during the previous decade; this had displaced the native, deep-rooted grasses that normally trapped soil and moisture even during periods of drought and high winds. The rapid mechanization of farm equipment, especially small gasoline tractors, and widespread use of the combine harvester contributed to farmers' decisions to convert arid grassland (much of which received no more than 10 inches (250 mm) of precipitation per year) to cultivated cropland."

tl;dr simply through farming techniques we fucked up the plains by uprooting grasses that kept soil from blowing around

Now imagine if a cataclysmic event involving radioactive storms killed all of said root structures, such as grasses and trees. What do you think is going to happen to the plains?

Pic related.

There's a lot of reasons you might pick the institute actually.
Your son named you new director. You have full control of everything afterwards.
He's dying.

I don't fully endorse everything the BoS stands for because for one, the reason you just stated and from a moral standpoint, I can't logically say whether or not synths are self aware or sentient.

The railroad is making quite the bold statement in asserting they are, and the institute is stating they aren't.

And the minutemen have no plans for the future whatsoever past day to day survival. They have no ambitions.

Each faction presents its own problems. So far the minutemen are the best in my opinion, but then you'd have to betray your own son. And aside from that they'd outright destroy a lot of the future's best and brightest minds for no other reason than the inability to come to a compromise.

But that's war for you.
And war... War never changes.
