The game shamelessly steals from every successful cult game and indie game and then panders to every Internet subculture while hamming itself into a meme frenzy. It also combines internet memeing with cartoon Sanic catchphrase memeing.
This self-awareness and calculation is ultimately what makes it weaker than Cave Story or LISA. It's not wholly innocent of popular culture. Instead, it panders and is aware of who it's marketing itself to--even smugly so--with its scads of barely tweaked and disguised memes.
Toby's pretty smart and self-assured while affecting something worthy of classic status because "he figured out the formula", and that kind of disingenuousness is offputting. It's calculation marketing itself as otherworldly fantasy rather than otherworldly fantasy itself. It is "the Internet" wearing a mask that says "I am not of the world."
It's ultimately too derivative to endure. It's the Eragon of indie games.

I played Undertale and the only part of the game I found enjoyable was Undying Undyne and Sans. I've been thinking of ways to fix the rest strictly from a gameplay point of view.

I think the player is free to decide for themselves if Toriel was a bitch. Having satirical characters in an indie game does not mean the developer is trying to erode traditional values and emasculate men. I also don't believe, in a game where all enemies are caricatures, it'd not a display of weakness for two manly knights to be gay for each other.
Papyrus was just an incompetent goofball. He was comic relief. I don't know what a 'fag pose' is, but he acted as heroic as he could because he was anything but. That's what makes his character humorous.

I just don't see how two knights being gay for each other is emasculating or neutering anything. The hardest boss fight in the game is from a male anyways (sans). I just don't see any plot to emasculate men here, or even if there is, it's so mild what's the point? Asgore is a very likable character anyways. The whole purpose of his character is that he's too kind and gentle to bring harm to you. I don't think Undyne and Alphy are great portrayals of females either. They're both pretty weird and strange people.
I think the game parodies everyone. Psychotic and neurotic dykes and not so macho men. I don't really see the point in getting politics involved, even if the creator might somehow trying to warp peoples' perceptions of men or whatever. Toby was alrady familiar with the Homestuck fanbase, so instant popularity was a freebie. Even then, it's mostly the writing that people fawn over. I've seen this idea lot over the past 15 years ranging from web comics to parody videos. Not a very new concept. I'm chocking a lot of its popularity up it to being a fad. Toby's getting a lot of credit for his "quirky" design like how if you hack the game to get to the ending Sans calls you a cheater or the character name screen. Which is the perfect way to market your game to vidya wasteland hipsters
Other than how the plot can completely branch based on pacifist or genocide, the pacifist story is not revolutionary and I didn't find it all that emotional. Aside from a few twists the ending played out how I thought it would. Big bad steals souls, your friends help you win the final battle, everyone reaches the surface and live happily ever after.
We've basically reached the point where the fans have extinguished all gameplay discussion and are now in the stage where they have nothing to talk about except what characters they want to fuck, what characters they are in love with or what autistic things the characters would do if they _____.
It's a fun game gameplay wise though if you can get past everything else. I applaud the guy who made it for making rpg combat not a boring menu fest of attacking and cast cure on yourself.

If nothing else, Undertale is one of the most interesting/unique games to have come out in the past 3 years or so. The game is fairly clever at times and the game play is pretty fun. On the contrary, the game also has the fucking Alphys hotland phone calls and puzzles that really don't add anything to the game by virtue of their implementation and ease of completion. However, it's not even remotely as bad as /v makes it out to be. The game unfortunately suffers from having really bad sonic-tier fans that blow it way out of proportion. I like it a lot, but seriously, fuck the fanbase.
As a side note, there is a phenomena that prevents the existence of Sans fan art that isn't dogshit. I just wanted a fucking half decent phone wallpaper that doesn't make Sans look like an actual retard or depict him with a 3edgy5me r33l skull.

The game would be completely the same if you removed all the "normal (relatively, no one is normal in this stupid game)" characters, like Sans. The entire game railroads you into one specific plotline. While you have options on what you can do, "doing bad things" just leads to you being guilt tripped. Why? Because they want you to do "good" things. But there's no perspective. IF you do 'bad' things no one defends you. What if killing all these monsters is right? It forces you to play from the perspective of some whiney baby with hackney morals that aren't realistic at all. Honestly from the intro, and the mentions of war I thought this game would have SOME elements of realism, but it has none.
What was even the point of making some of the characters gay? Why not leave them straight? And then there's even a 'nice' little easter egg of revealing Mettaton as not just a homo but a transsexual. Really? I can't see how anyone defends this game as anything other than some agenda filled bullshit.
And then, even if you do get the 'bad' ending by killing everything, the game tells you you weren't in control and it was just some evil demon. Bitch, just let me kill everyone and admit it was me. Fucking stupid game.
