Except in this game you're always gonna be an exsoldier/lawyer. In the previous games, although your main mission was find dad/kill benny/get water chip etc you always made your character's personality, background and attributes. In F4 you always have to be the good guy, and almost all dialogue consists of you saying "where is my baby?" Add to that, the charisma is the only attribute that you need to get higher to pass speech checks (intelligence etc. Speech checks are gone) further crippling the RPG aspect of the game.

My main character is a male that is pure melee, and it's fucking annoying so far. Keep getting shot to shit just trying to get in range. Have to use power armour all the time now just to survive, the strength bonus is just a nice extra. That fucking mirelurk queen was a horrendous fight, had to just pew pew from range while the minutemen did all the real work. I have jack shit in perception or agility so I can't use VATS either.
Second character is a 10 charisma 10 luck female. 1 int, using the idiot savant perk. I dunno how the fuck she became a lawyer but I figure she's essentially like Phoenix Wright in the courtroom. Combat wise... crits are fun.

DON'T mod yet. The updated nexus mod manager is prone to fucking up your game.
I ran it with mods fine for a day, then disabled one I didn't like and the game started crashing on launch. Ended up having to delete the .ini files, uninstalling NMM, and uninstalling/reinstalling the game.
The mods really aren't that good yet either as others have pointed out. Wait for better, more stable mods to come out first.

Oh yeah, I one shot anything that isn't legendary currently, but the problem is getting to the enemy without getting shot to hell. Currently using a Heavy Sledgehammer, does like 140 damage in my power armour.
Especially with how grenade happy super mutants are, shit is annoying. I think a main issue is that I have very low endurance, so no survivability. But I'm working on other perks at the moment so can't spare points for that stat. I'm mainly just strength and intelligence.

8 of my bases literally have concrete walls with only one entrance from the main road for provisioners and trainers and even then I have missile turrets set up at every conceivable position. Past a certain defense threshold the game shouldn't bother you at certain settlements.

I think the mindset that characters cant develop over time is what holds you back from really being able to RP if you want to so bad.
