GG, for me at least (I didn't really participate much at all, especially after the initial blowout of it) was about games journalists not promoting their friends games, especially without disclosing personal relationships or favors or how incestuous the "indie game dev" and gaming journalists are. Also it was about sites honestly critiquing things instead of just saying "Well, this game is about Depression, so it's great on that merit alone because it's different!" or "Well, this game is fucking MASS EFFECT 3 and I love Mass Effect, so this game gets a 9 despite all its glaring flaws!"
Those two things happen constantly still and it leads many of us to distrust pretty much any review these days as either "Wellp, that journo fucked that dev or they must be in that circle of friends" OR "Wellp, that's a paid review, of course Fallout 4 got perfect scores despite that it has bugs and isn't optimized well"
Furthermore, as I already said, Kotaku isn't standing up to publishers. What they ARE doing, however, is doing things for the clicks that aren't in either the best interest of the reader OR the developer. It benefits no one that they leak scripts. It ALSO doesn't help with Kotaku writers are just allowed to call people "human garbage" unpoliced on their twitter accounts.
Being a public figure, you can't just put a disclaimer on your twitter account that says "My opinions are my own, not Kotakus" and then say things like "gamers are dead" and talk down to many of your readership while supporting people who are saying horribly inflammatory things and even saying them yourself and get away with it. I mean, I guess you can for a short period of time but we are seeing blowback from that right now.

The problem is that GG originally started basically as a way to shit on Quinn and the people around her. Because of that, it was caught in this weird spot of half of them trying to talk ethics and half of them just wanting to expose 'indie' people.
