Regardless of what you think about the game, it's lack of content has very little to do with its population numbers.
It can't be emphasized enough how strong of an iron grasp COD has on the gaming public. It's massive. It cracked the casual code nearly a decade ago with Cod 4, removing the need for headshots or consistant accuracy but rewarding players constantly. I teach grades 6-12 and every kid that games plays COD. Not getting it is out of the question because everyone is getting it.
The only way to even moderately compete with COD is to literally spend hundreds of millions of dollars advertising and shilling your game for months at a time. This is why Destiny and GTAV have remained relevant and are in the top 5 most played games on both Xbox and PlayStation.
TL;DR it's fine to make fun of battlefront for its shortcomings, but even if it was a very true sequel to battlefront II and played exactly as the fans wanted, it wouldn't be doing any better. It's shortcomings are not the cause of its population decline.

There is nothing special or particularly good about Witcher 3's story compared to any other fantasy book/film/TV/game. It just had good voice acting, animations, and lip sync. The story as a whole was mediocre and uninteresting. Good games have their quality as top fucking tier marketing, they get viralled to hell and back. Marketing boosts that there pre-orders and shit, but it doesn't always guarantee a hit.
CoD is still selling millions every single title no matter what the game is like simply because the origin of the casual grabfest, CoD 4, was a breakout hit thanks to a gameplay style that casuals loved. The older CoDs are riding on the wave of the previous games, not just current marketing.
