Is this series still fun today for newcomers? The most "old school" RPG I've played is Dragon Quest 1. Is the first Ultima still fun or did it age badly? I'm willing to excuse old school mechanics and shitty graphics if it's still fun.

5 and 7 are still very replayable. 7 part 2 is as well but play 7 first. 8 and 9 were pretty bad. 1-3 are good but they aged very poorly.
The one at the bottom. The rest isn't even 3D.
5 is basically 4 but better, so it's definitely the best.

4-5 are very similar to Dragon Quest. Only the battle system is a bit different, but quicker.
You should give them a go! Very nice, adventurous feeling, lotsa dungeons and places to explore.

The interface is the hardest thing to get over today, and sometimes the games are very cryptic, IV in particular with how you put the Virtues into practice.
