Call me casual but I prefer them this way. Companions were so delicate in the other modern Fallouts, you'd want to keep them away from the combat if you liked them, and then what's the point? Dogmeat dies in the first encounter he's in half the time, and any other companions are going to step on a mine or something eventually. Super mutant ones were decent though.
A decent compromise would have been having them run back to a settlement when they are "killed" so you'd need to go pick them up again. Effectively giving them one life if you were exploring a vault or something.

I'm not saying it's the best solution, but it is at least a solution to a problem. It creates another problem, but a relatively minor one. For example, now it's possible to "Nuzlock" them and just abandon them to some settlement you never visit if they die. Also, I don't think permadeath for companions lends itself too well to a game that has them tell you their story and tries to develop their character over time, at least not one with action/real time combat. Games like Fire Emblem work much better because the turn based combat can create moments where you need to choose between a sure win and a companion's likely death, or risking the mission to save one of them, or even risking one ally you like for another you like just as much.

In Fallout 3, my two favorite moments in hindsight were when Dogmeat died protecting me and when his puppy showed up after I got the the expansion.
Dogmeat is the only viable companion for a stealth build. enemies can't see him.

don't own a copy yet. computer can't run it. from the streams i've seen and the small amount i've played on someone else's system, dogmeat doesn't serve much purpose. he gets in the way, charges groups of enemies he can't handle causing you to be more offensive, and enemies will attack him instead of you making encounters that much more casual. he's merely a second inventory.
just like new vegas companions. they take most of the difficulty away so if you want to be challenged, this game won't provide it.
