The basic plan is to control society from the shadows by replacing important people with synths who should be, in theory, completely subservient to the Institute. At least, that's what I think they were going for. Why they replace complete randos is beyond me; the only possible reason would be to have enough eyes and men on the ground in case things took a turn for the worse in regards to both the organization itself and towards their synth infiltrator.
Seems like it'd be far more efficient to just bring in a robot army and style themselves as uplifting peacekeepers, but that would take a lot of planning from the people in charge or something.

Brotherhood has it's problems, but the Institute is far more dangerous. The Brotherhood operates more or less in the open, so while they're ferocious and heavily armed, they can be confronted and dealt with if they become too destructive or dangerous. The NCR did just that. As the world recovers and governments re-emerge, the Brotherhood can be assimilated or liquidated if they won't cooperate or no longer serve a useful purpose.
The institute builds robots that are nearly indistinguishable from regular humans and operate in secret with an army of nearly perfect infiltrators. That's dangerous as fuck, they could subvert any government by replacing its officers, assassinate anyone, and generally be seriously bad news.
Neither is a "good" choice, but the Brotherhood is way, way less dangerous to the world.

The reward is survival. The various farmers know they can't survive alone so they enlist in the minutemen so if they're attacked they can back each other up.

I don't mind the lore errors, but the "tactical" gameplay is just so lacking when compared to proper squad based tactical games like Jagged Alliance 2.It's still miles better than Fallout 3, though.

Apparently the major plot points are canon, but everything else isn't. This does, however, mean that there's a Vault pumping out armies of pre-war tier robot soldiers under the control of the BoS, which is going to be a bit difficult to explain away if they ever want to make a game near Chicago.
