You know, censorship aside, there's one thing that really disappoints me about this game.
It's the endings. See, when you're playing as the guy, you actually pick love interests: You have a choice between a Japanese maiden and a mysterious loli. (You're the reincarnation of their respective lovers, so to speak.)
Now, the place you're in is a place of suicide. But you don't get the option to die romantically with the girls and be together in death. No matter what you pick, you have to live: Either you fight them and defeat them, or the girls get cold feet at the last moment and send you back.
It's bizarre, especially given the themes of the game. (i.e. Death is better than eternal loneliness). The Fatal Frame V artbook mentions this. There's apparently a cut ending where all the girls die, and they take the place of the new maidens.
I guess the game would've been too morbid, otherwise? But this was the definitely the most sexual Fatal Frame game so far.

They have the unedited Japanese version. They then translate the game for America and Europe, so you have the Japanese version translated and uncensored. There's no reason at any point that they can't keep the original intact, and have an edited copy for countries where it has to be censored. There is no "cost" here, no justification. Even the process of adding and removing the costumes (which is something that was done anyway for NA/EU) is something that can be done in a matter of hours.

Which makes your point about Australian censors moot. The question then becomes: "Why did this publisher in particular decide to censor it?" or "Why did they censor it in this time?". And the response is irrelevant because all that matters is telling the publisher that it shouldn't happen. If they're not bound by any good reason to censor (and most reasons to censor generally aren't good), it shouldn't be done.

Note the word "already-established" here. A movie adaptation is a completely new and different work in a medium without that specific content. It is derivative of a work in another medium, but altering scenes/characters/roles is not censorship.
