I just finished the game 10 seconds ago.
Installing J Sawyer's mod was a mistake. Doesn't make the game more fun at all. Combined with AWOP's bullshit enemies, ended up getting on my nerves so much that I just bumrushed the ending. Didn't even bother completing the rest of New Vegas Bounties or that one autumn leaves mod.

I had a blast when with my second playthrough of honest hearts I abandoned the methods I'd been using the entire play and embraced tribal warfare and weaponry, and much like with Dead Money taking away equipment, this self imposed taking away of equipment got me more invested playing the dlc with thought and tools it presented

it's also reason I appreciate jsawyer's changes so much, I find it really enhances that method of playing the game, makes it easier to play it like so without having to bog oneself down with self-imposed realism to ground how you play the game

Are there any mods for NV where you can just fight really challenging enemies? I'm looking for something that just continually throws enemies at you. The problem isn't just that Ulysses is a fucking garbage character, although he is. The problem is that the central conflict, the entire premise of the whole story, is some shit that happened in the past. Introducing backstory is NEVER a good idea, because A) the player has no emotional investment to something that happened before they started playing the game and B) it overrides the player's own characterization. For instance, they may have believed that the courier had only just picked up the job and got fucked on their first delivery but no, you're wrong, the courier has been delivering packages so long that a settlement formed around their route and fuck you for thinking otherwise.
The fact that ulysses spends hours and hours babbling on about MUH BEAR AN BULL just to get across a few simple points (I don't like the legion or the NCR, but I liked this place, you made it and then blew it up, turns out one man can make a difference, I'm gonna stuff up in retaliation) is just salt in the wound.

Games should be challenging and when you never miss a bullet or use a stimpak it just becomes a hoarding simulator. I'm not sure how I could design a save rule without loopholes that would satisfy my autistic brain though.

The mechanics are not very good, but the game isn't only mechanics. The content is pretty great, there's a ton of guns to mess with, and most people find something that feels right to them. There's a reason you'll find it hard to find a "favorite gun" thread without any FNV weapons.

J Sawyer rebalances the game in favour of sneaking criticals and heavy DT. Reduces XP gain, slashes your health to a quarter of its original value, that sort of thing.

jsawyer + hardcore is fantastic. You can run it with Project Nevada (there's even a compatibility patch on the nexus).

increases XP required per level to about ~33%
massively decreases weight capacity(from 150 base to 50)
Adds DR to armors, reduces movement speed penalty for heavy armor
tweaks a metric ton of weapons and perks(mostly buffs)
reduces stimpak availability, adds weight to them, adds "expired stimpak" which is 80% of the stimpaks you'll find. They heal very little.
And a ton of other changes.
I recommend getting it and Realistic Weapon Damages. But tweak RWD so that tough shit stays tough, so that weapon progression and damage perks are still valid.
RWD makes firefights a lot more dangerous, but it also makes super mutants, deathclaws, ghost people and etc a lot squishier than they should be. I'd give you the link to my altered version, but I don't have access to the file right now.
I also recommend project nevada for the grenade and sprint hotkey, and the slower backward movement so that melee enemies can't be kited without any effort. You can also use project nevada to tweak the economy aspect of the game, but I just use Bartertown Rough.

Enemies in this game are massive massive bullet sponges and come in such large numbers that trying to carry around a "realistic" number of weapons/ammunition just makes the game an unbelievable chore.

JSawyer also lowers the level cap to 35, so you won't meet the extreme DLC bullet sponges that pop by lvl 50.

You aren't supposed to play it on anything but Normal, silly. So, while you die much faster than in vanilla, your enemies aren't that much more resilient, unless you do something like trying to kill dudes in metal armour with a 9mm SMG. I one-shot powder gangers with a single shotgun.
