That was mostly because very high launch prize for ps3 during first times of global economical recess and some audience portions being a bit stubborn. Most people were already happy with ps2 and the huge amount of games (a good 70% were not exclusives but other console never had the whole advertising that ps2 had) and didn't realize that new systems brings new games and fresh technology for them. Then new games from known brands started to came out on newer gen leaving ps2 behind and stubborns started to buy ps3. Sony then learned from some of their launch strategy mistakes and Ps4 had an overall better launch phase. Also normies just didn't care and bought ps3 and ps4 anyways

There is no one answer that fits everyone, and because most of the people who bought and enjoy systems aren't in these kinds of threads because they want actual discussion.
The general reason I bought my PS4 was Sony first party and Japanese third party games, but the reason I early adopted (bought on launch specifically) was Infamous Second Son and Resogun, as I thoroughly enjoy the Infamous series and Housemarques games.
I've used the PS4 consistently since I got it on launch, and have built up a sizable collection so far. Pic related. Recently put around 50 to 60 hours into Disgaea 5 so far and it's my GOTY (I expect Just Cause 3, which I'm getting on PC, might take that title though). I've bought a lot of consoles on launch and the PS4 has been one of the most consistently entertaining in its first two years for me.
I understand why others don't care for what it offers though, of course, people have different tastes.
