It does have the best soundtrack of this year in my opinion, so it managed to do some things better than most games. I think it's worthy of some praise.
I think the reason people enjoy it so much is that it shattered their expectations. From the get-go, you're tricked into a sense of false-security, and things simply become either funnier or melancholic from then-on out. For me, I didn't even get tired of it as it went on. Every little fight was exciting and had remarkable difference for such a simple concept. The story had my interested, and I really enjoyed the characters. I never expected to be doing half the shit that I actually was doing, or to be presented with the comedic material. I figured it was just going to be a little indie game.
The story then branched out to be remarkably complicated for an indie game, and it was great that it was presented in small segments that were difficult to unravel in their entirety. Even the music was unlike any other game of the style.
Honestly, I don't believe that a person who has played through it in its entirety would be able to say that it isn't a great game.

The games that are them are, among others Urban Legend in Limbo and Persona 2 duology. These games both take the theme of memes and emply scenarios where said memes are becoming reality, and in case of Persona 2 you are even able to use this to your advantage by spreading select memes that become reality.

Honestly, though. If I think about which of these games I'll remember most fondly a year from now, it's most certainly going to be Undertale. A well-paced, enjoyable story with a satisfying conclusion. Combat is novel, if not all that challenging (for pacifists that is), but the most important thing to me is that the game never lets a note linger too long, and it escalated near perfectly to its conclusion.
It felt like it was made with vision, and with a personal spark of passion and inspiration. Something I just never once felt playing MGSV. It really should have ended at 4, with MGR being a fun, mostly non-canon sidestory.

The only thing Alphys ever did before getting the job of Royal Scientist was making a body for Mettaton, which she passed of as a "robot with a SOUL" instead of calling it what it is: a hunk of junk animated by a ghost. That lie is the only reason Asgore trusted her with the SOUL experiments, which she was obviously incapable of conducting properly, she literally had no idea what she was doing and just injected everything with Determination, hoping something good would happen (and in the end it kinda did, I guess, since the Amalgamates survived and are okay with their new selves?)
Just finished it and True ending. I love how the shitposters need to bait this game ever other day because of how genuinely good it is. It's a total love letter to every fan of classic Jrpg's or even older games. This is the only game I've played in the last 2 years. As a *game*, in terms of how much fun I had *playing* it, I guess 7/10.
As a story to uncover and analyze, along with the metanarrative and super nice character moments, 15/10.
I don't know if its high praise or outright damnation to say that I don't even like video games anymore but kind of fell in love with this one. But I was impressed

For me it's a tie between the date with Undyne or the Muffet fight.
My only gripe with the game is that every bosses introduce these cool new mechanics and then they're never used again outside of the mini-boss rush in the Asriel fight, I wish more fights would let you use the purple mechanics of Muffet or the yellow mechanics of Mettaton.

If I had to say probably Asriel's fight in True ending, I know that;s probably a little boring, but it was really fun to go back through and re-do all of the friendly boss fights. Aside from that, Muffet probably takes that spot, if only because the fight was only somewhat foreshadowed, the mechanics were awesome, and the fight legitimately ramped up the difficulty
