I played a little of one of the remastered games on the DS, I had to fight some monster called Kung or something, I got fucked up and i stopped playing. Should I try it again or just give up?

Started playing Dragon Quest IV as my first DQ game a few weeks before the announcement, so I'm really happy.
I'm loving 4 so far, great classic feel and I'm loving that right now I'm following towns people's words to go and look for more companions. Currently looking for Ragnar.

There are no bad Dragon Quest games, but 1 and 2 are extremely oldschool mid-80s RPGs that are pretty rough today and general consensus is that DQ6 is the most forgettable in the series (but don't let that stop you from playing it)
If you're new to the series I'd recommend playing in order. This is the most ideal way to play. If you don't want to play 1 and 2, as they are extremely dated games, try 4.
I played Dragon Quest I-III, VIII and IX a few months ago. Thinking we would never get a new game.
Playing DQIII for a third time was my best experience with the game.

DQ6 and DQ7 were developed by now-defunct Heartbeat, who also made the DQ3 SFC remake and the DQ4 PS1 remake.
So why did they chose to remake DQ7 anyway?
I get DQ8 because it was so popular on the PS2 and all, but I dont think DQ7 had the same popularity.

DQVII has seven different characters and you can choose which ones are in your party (like DQIV). However, the focus on story and the lack of a carriage means for a lot of the game, the game forces you to use specific characters.

It's just buggy overall. I had a few crashes/freezes in DQ1, and after the final boss, the game froze.
2 has more bugs than the first half has, including a sidequest that fucks up because the prince's name is too long in the fan-translated version due to giving them fixed names even though the names were suppose to be semi random.
That's really it.
They're still compatable and not "completely" terrible or something, but I could understand why somebody would choose another version of 1 or 2 to play.

Basically, play them in numerical order, always the remake version. If you are intimidated by old school RPGs, then play something like Dragon Quest V on DS or VIII on PS2.
But you still need to go back and play most of them in order. So you might as well just start with DQI.

Dragon Quest VII is the most story focused game in the series. But it has pacing issues because it also has a class system. These flow problems might be fixed with the remake, but I haven't played it yet to confirm.
Dragon Quest VIII has a perfect flow. In great part because of lots of side quests and a skill point system.

8 is the perfect transition from the classic 2D DQ style to 3D. For example the world map isn't shit like other 3D RPGs where you're giant and towns/mountains/forests/etc are small, it feels like you're exploring the world. Forests are actual forests and not patches of green shit. When you come across a town it's as big as a town and not just a small building or two. DQ8 has the best world map I've seen in a game, and it only gets better when you get the ability to fly. That fucking flying song.

Only DQ4 removed Party Chat and no one did a fan hack of the DS version to include the Party Chat. So mobile is sadly the only way to get the fully experience. Personally I just hate DQ4 DS in general because the localization is complete shit but I'm also a guy that loves the NES game even if it lacks on some basic gameplay that newer DQ games have.

If you are having problems you might want to farm for gold. Buy a couple more herbs walk around the castle for a bit and return and sleep. Buy some new gear and return. I personally never had issues but you just might had really bad luck.

If not, you're probably going to have to grind. Not for levels, for gold. I bought the hero a boomerang and probably some armor for him and Bianca. After that Bianca will learn some spells and you should be good. Grab some herbs too if you don't mind dying (though keep in mind you lose half your gold and have to pay to have your team resurrected)

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the remakes of DQM and DQM2 were skipped in favor of bringing over DQM:J3. That or they would have to pile on a ton of DQ games in the span of a few years, which I would be perfectly fine with.
With DQ7R getting a western release it makes me hopeful that Rocket Slime 3 will get a western release as well. SE said that DQ7R could be too big of a risk to bring over due to the amount of work it would take to translate it. They also said they were surprised that the west wanted more Rocket Slime games and that RS3 could be a possibility to bring over due to taking a lot less work than DQ7R to bring over.
If we get DQ7R and not RS3 I'll be confused.

I've never played the PS2 version, but off the top of my head:
- Can speed up battles
- Two new dungeons (one is short and just an excuse to get one more Mercello scene in the game, the other is a bunch of copy/pasted boss fights with buffed up stats)
- On screen enemies
- Automatically have maps of all dungeons except the Eternal Dragon's.
- New equipment
- Morrie and Gelda (Red) are playable now and are pretty damn cool (especially Gelda)
- Twin Dragon Strike (not sure what the English name is, Jessica's whip skill everyone loves) is nerfed.
- Worse graphics
- Voice acting (though the English version had that)
- Orchestral soundtrack (Which the English version had)
- More costumes for Jessica (some old ones censored, though the bunny suit it even more revealing). Everyone else has at least one costume, some have 2-3.
- More prizes from the Medal Princess
- New photo quest
- Can see how much exp you need to level up from the menu
- New rank in the Monster Battle Road
All I can think of right now, though I think I forgot some stuff. Overall, it sounds like the better version.

I dunno, I was pretty confident that DQ7R was never ever yet we're getting that and DQ8R. If we're getting a game that SE was adamant that we weren't going to get anything is possible. They even said that japan didn't want more RS games yet the west does. It would be silly for them not to release RS3(they also mention the first RS is a possibility to bring over) when it would take significantly less work to do so.

Oh yeah, save anywhere, I forgot about that. And yeah, the sage stone was nerfed. 60-80 HP instead of 80-100. Not that it mattered, though I had two Sage Stones by the end of the game, Hustle Dance and Behomazun took care of me.
Yeah, those are the only scenes changes. Which reminds me, I saw Riizas (not sure what her English name is) from the English version of the game. I was surprised to see that her cleavage had been covered up and her dress strap was on properly. I can't believe they censored her but not Jessica.

anyone here play dq8 3ds already? whats your opinion on the enemies running around instead of random encounters? from a game dev standpoint it makes it a lot harder to guess what level the player should be for a boss. but at the same time the main story bosses are easily taken down by tension abuse.

Classes level up quicker for the most part in DQ VII 3DS. Never played the PSX version, but I never had to grind jobs in the 3DS version. I never got any Godhands by the end of the game, but I came close.

I've not played the PS2 version, but I liked the on screen enemies in VIII. They were annoying as hell in VII, always spawning in front of you in a tight hall. I swear, sometimes that resulted in more fights than a random battle system. It was not an issue in VIII. Never had any issues with levels either, but I made sure to bully metal monsters for a little bit when I found them so I wouldn't have to grind or anything.

SquareEnix has proven, countless times over 25 years, that anything they promise or say can be completely flipped around. They spent the last four years giving us dozens of excuses for why DQ games won't get localized. Even two weeks ago they started spouting all this junk about using kickstarter.
Then oh look. Overnight they reveal DQVII and VIII are coming. So basically, anything goes. They may never bring the games over. They might bring them all over. We have no way to know.
But the one thing we do know is that all the spamming of their blog/e-mail/facebook page worked. And we got something. So my suggestion is to keep spamming, asking for all DQ games to be released. Not just the one you want, but just all of them. Let's get a second renaissance for DQ going like we got last gen on DS.

Because DQ never really fucks with the game. Since all their games are simple (simple=/=bad) it's easier to either remove annoying things or add more content.
DQ1 and 2 made grinding less annoying with DQ2 has a map which makes finding things less of a pain
DQ3 added bonus dungeon and 2 more classes
DQ4 added a bag and an extra chapter (however because the localization is bad personally I like the NES version over DS/mobile)
DQ5 has an extra wife
Don't really know much about changes in DQ6 but I'm guessing more classes
DQ7 has tons of stuff from changing how the class system works to shard radar.
DQ8 2 more playable characters and extra ending.
All the while keeping everything good in the original. Horii is a fucking genius.

Dragon Quest as a series is the epitome of how remakes should be done. Every remake improved on the original, except possibly DQVI. 13 out of 14 remakes being better than the original is a ratio no other series can boast.
It helps that the original core team has been working on the series for 30 years. And works on every remake (and spin off).

From what I've seen and know of the localizations, the DS version of V has name changes and puns galore (Queen Isis was changed to Cleohatra, Queen Sophia to Miss Count, etc). I don't know what the quality of the PS2 fan translation is like having never used the patch, but the PS2 version is pretty nice. Play the DS one if you really want to marry Debora, otherwise play the PS2 version.

The party member being entirely mute made the world feel fucking dead to me. The end game and many quests being MMO-tier also weighs it down, along with the fact it seems more like a "best of" game with all of the references to other things rather than having its own identity. Don't really see people hate it. In fact, I usually only see two responses. Either "it was my first Dragon Quest game and my favorite" or "I didn't like it as much as other DQ games, but it was a good DS game."
I fall into the second category. Its a great game if you compare it to any other series out there. But having played all the other DQ games before it...it felt lacking compared to what a Dragon Quest game could be. Mostly because it didn't focus on the things a Dragon Quest game usually focuses on. Exploration, NPC interaction and gameplay all felt lackluster compared to Dragon Quest VIII before it.
It has little to do with graphics. And certainly not about the content of the game, which it easily has the most content of any DQ game. But the quality of the content just didn't measure up to what I expect.

Making alchemy cook instantly didn't cover up how poorly DQIX ruined the recipes themselves. Having to wait months for a DLC item like Orichalcum or dark matter to appear was just fucking awful. As well as having to find mass quantities of items. Not only do you need to fill 3 slots, but sometimes get 50-99 items in EACH slot. It's a mess.
Dragon Quest VIII did Alchemy perfectly. DQIX is the game that ruined it.

You can get all the DLC quests and inn guests with action replay. The few items that were exclusive to the DQVC can also be obtained with action replay.
I still have no idea why the DQVC was online. They could have easily made it offline and work based on the date on your DS.

It'd be fine with turbo speed I imagine. I actually thought about getting that DQ Anniversary Wii disc that had the FC and SFC versions of I-III on it but thought... Why? I can emulate them easily enough, if I wanted physical versions I should just get the actual cartridges, and I don't know if I could take playing the FC versions without an emulator's turbo function anyway. Even the SFC versions would be hard to stomach in terms of grinding normally.
Also, reading this thread, do not listen to the people who shit on the mobile versions of 4,5,6, I know it's cool to hate on smartphones, but those are the best versions of the game quality-wise.
They are the exact same thing as the DS versions, but as a piece of hardware the DS is fucking shit.
The phone versions have upped resolution as opposed to the abysmal internal resolution of the DS. This does not matter if you emulate the DS versions with Desmume, but even emulation won't help you with the terrible fucking sampling rate of the soundtrack.

To anyone new to Dragon Quest let me help you out on where you should start.
I'd recommend playing in order but if you want to play the best of the best start with 5 or 8
I - SNES
II - SNES
III - SNES or GBC (SNES is better overall, GBC has a couple more extras.)
IV - DS or Mobile (Mobile version has Party Chat restored, is otherwise identical to DS version.)
V - DS or PS2 (DS has an additional waifu to marry, PS2 has better graphics.)
VI - DS
VII - PS1 or 3DS
VIII - PS2 or wait for 3DS (Mobile version is gutted)
IX - DS
X - lol never ever because it's a MMO
XI - not confirmed yet but it will come out for PS4, 3DS and maybe the NX
