You can put 1TB HDD into slim and be done with it.
With superslim you lose automatic disc loader and sexy design, its louder and some people reported issues with games like uncharted and GoW (mostly sound looping), its heating more as well.

I have to say, playing old games give me a new insight of what made them good.
A lot of it came with hardware limitation and attempts at exceeding it.
In older tomb raiders everything was dark because of draw distance, that created some amazing atmosphere and worked well with the game, kingsley adventure is pretty creepy because of it as well.
In Front Mission 2 and 3 rather simple models are used with combination of realistic color palette to create incredible believable world.
Crash and Spyro used very simple and bright color palette, they build mood around you with color and sound, spyro 1 does some amazing thing with "Dark Hollow" level creating a fairy tile like atmosphere with jingles and comfy lighting.
Final Fantasy 8 uses amazing design when it comes to npc and towns, combination of realism and magic, something that hasnt been done since.
Great story fitting the premisses only benefits it.
There were games like Okami, Katamari or Alladin with rotoscoped animation, it was something new and really fun at the time.
There are very few games that attempted anything like that on seventh and even less on 8 gen.
Even when it comes to visual design they just check as many effects as they can and expect the engine to do the rest, no one even attempts to show something new.
Even if those games havent aged well somehow they create atmosphere much better that another CoD or BF.
PS3 games are cheap as fuck now and there are a lot of great games to play. I also have the feels for my PS3's (got the 60 gig with the PS2 chips in a box in my closet). Also, the fatties are the best looking versions.
