Actually, it's the equivalent of holding block against starting enemies in Ninja Gaiden. In Batman, your counters only deal damage if it's a 3x combo or higher. Mashing does nothing.
Arkham games are easy shit, but spamming counter won't get you anywhere, it's not asscreed where counters give you instakills.
In fact spamming prevents you from getting those one shot finishers.

Don't you need to perform finishing moves to defeat opponents in the Arkham games? Just mashing the reaction button doesn't really prove anything because you're not gonna beat them, just constantly react.

Chivalry is the superior dueling game while Mount&Blade has huge battles with hundreds of combatants. I really can't see how any Platinum game compares. They tend to be stupidly easy unless you go for the self-imposed challenge of maximizing score.
AAA games dont have good combat because they need to make the player feel like they are doing "epic" things and you cant have the "epic" actions behind a skill wall so you make the combat super simple and flashy so everybody who has the basics of playing videogames down can feel like they're great
