I have never met a normal, straight guy who made their characters girls. Not even the few gay guys I've known who played vidya used females characters. Interestingly, the only people I knew who used girl characters were the furry/anime kids and me in middleschool when I was a complete dork.

If it's a roleplaying game, I'll make up a custom character and what gender they are depends entirely on the mood or whatever backstory/personality I gave them. I don't tend to stick to one gender.
If it's not a roleplaying game (but you can still customize your character) I just go with the default. Like I did in Fallout 4.
