A piece of advice if you plan clearing all the routes, don't play Nohr first.
Hoshido's campaign is shit both in characters AND gameplay but luckly you can rush it, if you're interested in the subplots just read the conversations between the royals.
Also don't bother with support/children on Nohr and Hoshido, you get all the characters anyways in the third route so you can play your eugenics there.
Also if you're coming from FEA, be aware that Nohr/IK on normal are harder than FEA on hard.

Birthrights is the easiest but harder than awakening. Revelations is in the middle but features a lot of SD tier characters in terms of usefulness. Conquest is supposedly very hard with it's normal mode being on the same level as birthrights hard.

In my personal experience, an awakening blind playthrough is about 12-15 hours if you grind minimally and do some side quests. Getting all children and paralogues can take around 25-30 hours. Not counting any dlc.

However, when it comes to storytelling you can't really disagree that it makes an emotional difference if you're killing an adult compared to a child. Even if it's only make-belief doesn't really mean it can't affect you. It has to do with what feelings you want to invoke, and in that regard you can't really change without consequences.
Then again, Japan does sometimes set the ages too low for what is reasonable to believe. And the entire situation with "looks 10, but is really 1000 years old thing" is also an annoying trope.
