Even ignoring the very real and likely possibility that Square offered very limited options for their rep, it's a simple fact that it would've been seen as a faux pas on Nintendo's part if their choice was anything less than iconic. But that wasn't your question. Your question was "what does FFVII have that other games don't?". It's a poor question because it's a game in a longrunning series in a common genre. Games have borrowed from it ever since, including games in the selfsame franchise.
"Nostalgia" is different from "acknowledging historical significance". I'm not rose-tinting anything about the game. I'm observing that a game had an effect on game design and the industry.
But alright, friend. If you really want something unique about FFVII, I'll throw it at you: The materia system. It's one of the most freeform customization systems in Final Fantasy. Way more flexible than any iteration of jobs or any sort of grid. It affects all aspects of your character, including equipment choice. It makes every equipment change meaningful, as the equipment's stats and special traits are leveraged versus how much materia you can equip, whether or not you can use support materia effectively, and how quickly that materia will grow. This is a far cry from the simple linear progression of numbers that the vast majority of RPGs hearken to.
Unfortunately, that flexibility and the sheer power it offered also proves to make the game pretty easy, which is a shame.FFIX's ability system takes a lot of what makes Materia fun and interesting, sacrificing some of the flexibility by limiting who can learn what ability in exchange for a more balanced and difficult gameplay experience. It's a real good game. Shame it'll never be an icon like FFVII, as much as I'd rather it were.
