I have an i3 and a 270x.I can play all the same games you can for a fraction of the price, and still hit stable 60fps
If it's for gaming an upgrade to Skylake can be nice for some some games. Though the 6600k is nearly identical to the 6700k in game performance. If you OC then they're even closer in game performance since both top out around the same with reasonable 24/7 OCs.
Actually kinda in the same boat as you. Hanging on my 970 till the next gen GPUs. I did upgrade to Skylake CPUs though. A 6600k and a MSI m7 mobo.

I'm not really going to bother going from Haswell i5 to Skylake i5 honestly.
One thing I've been considering as well though is waiting for Broadwell-E - it should come in March, will cost roughly the same as Haswell-E and should be a bit faster.
Since the X99 platform is only about 150$ more I'm kinda on edge about it. Having extra two cores and four threads could potentially be pretty nice in the future, the HEDT platform has better longetivity as well.

Most benches aren't even done at 1080 anymore because there's no point, unless you have stupid amounts of AA or other garbage negligible improvement visuals turned on. Absolutely, but that has more to do with raw IPC.
You'll easily see something like 70% better performance per core coming from something like i7 920, even more when using new instructions.
